A visit to the Home Depot sometimes yields more than hardware and tool. The wetlands behind the Home Depot in Seekonk, MA are home to a rookery of Great Blue Herons. If you go before the trees leaf out, you can watch their pair bonding and nest building activities. Consider this individual, patiently waiting for its mate to return, then seeing the desired partner returning.

As the pair reunite, they groom each other, and rest their heads on one another. They display this behavior shortly after sunrise and, as with these images, near sunset.

Such beautiful photography that truly captures their close bonds. Herons, more so than other birds, feel so prehistoric and ancient; their flight, calls, stalking of fish in the creek behind our house.;)
Thank you for sharing your talent and view of the world as you see it!

Hi, SD! This is great – not only beautiful but informative, as well!!!
Love, SDII
Thanks, Laura,
Wonderful shots of their nuptial regalia and ritual.
Patience with your skill in photography are creations in themselves. How long after the eggs are laid is the developing time before hatching–in general? I ask because I suspect if you can you’ll be present..
Nice Long-Necked Finches, Laura!! I liked the Head to Head and Eye to Eye frames the most.
