Well said. The concern many people have now is that those things that have sustained us in the past will be eroded too significantly to continue to sustain us. Vigilance is essential.

Laura and others: great and insightful although varying comments. Our democratic government has undergone dramatic and frequently cataclysmic challenges from the day after the Revolution ended to the present, such as the Articles of the Confederation, Adams v Jefferson, Civil War, Teapot Dome, presidential assignations and impeachments, depressions, slavery, civil rights, Nixon's resignation, Gore's Supreme Court challenge, etc., and now Trump's presidency. Many of these and other moments in American history would have brought down lesser governments with chaos in the streets. Through all of this and more, Americans looked to the Constitution for guidance and by doing so made America stronger. Our democratic institution is our life blood which gives us comfort and reassurance that America will and can survive any challenge.

Critical thinking skills are at a low ebb, for sure. Sometimes voters get the government they deserve, if not the one they wanted. Time will tell this time around.

Yes, of course the Wikileaks material, disseminated with little critical attention by news media, did clearly influence voters. But, how many and how much? Was it determinative of the election? Hard to quantify, thus hard to determine. Not like ballot box stuffing or hacking into balloting systems. Remember, Trump lost the popular vote by over 2.9 million.
